Today marks International Youth Day, which is marked to raise awareness of youth issues and celebrate the contributions of youth worldwide.

The idea for International Youth Day was first proposed at the inaugural World Youth Forum of the United Nations System in 1991 and was officially adopted by the United Nations in 1998. The day promotes the World Programme of Action for Youth and recognizes the important role young people play in advancing peace, inclusion, and positive change around the world.

It's especially important to recognize the contributions of young people advocating for equity within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Their leadership, advocacy, and lived experiences continue to help build a more inclusive and equitable future for everyone.

Cette journée fait la promotion du Programme d’action mondial pour la jeunesse et reconnaît le rôle essentiel que jouent les jeunes dans la promotion de la paix, de l’inclusion et du changement positif partout dans le monde.

July 27th marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Two-Spirit term.

In 1990, at the Third North American Gathering of Native Gays and Lesbians in Sandy Saulteaux Spiritual Centre north of Winnipeg, the term Two-Spirit was adopted. The Two-Spirit term was used to describe Indigenous individuals who possess both masculine and feminine spirits and attributes. This term was created to develop a unique identity honouring the diverse roles and sexualities within Indigenous communities.

The Two-Spirit community has been pivotal in advancing conversations about the intersection of race, gender, sexuality, and Indigenous identity but many more conversations lie ahead. Use today to reflect on the meaning of the term and how it has helped empower those who identify as Two-Spirit. It is also important to acknowledge the challenges that still lie ahead. Inform yourself about ways that you can help advocate for the rights of both Indigenous and Two-Spirit communities today and every other day of the year!

July 26th marks Polysexual and Polyromantic Visibility Day, a time for all of us to lift up Polysexual voices, learn about the Polysexual community, and celebrate the experiences and identities of those who identify with the term!

Polysexuality falls under the multisexual umbrella, which also includes—among others—Bisexuality, pansexuality, and omnisexuality. Polysexual folks experience romantic and/or sexual attraction to any combination of genders, but crucially, not necessarily all genders. Polysexual folks have a distinct identity within the multisexual community, and it is important that their experiences and identities are understood and respected.

Like many communities under the 2SLGBTQIA+ umbrella, Polysexual people can experience misunderstanding and invalidation. Some of these challenges can even come from within the broader 2SLGBTQIA+ community. This is something we must work on, for all those who have either a multisexual or less well-known identity.

For this Polysexual and Polyromantic Visibility Day, those of us outside of the Polysexual community must fully commit ourselves to supporting and uplifting polysexual folks and their voices. July 16th marks International Drag Day, which celebrates and recognizes the art of Drag all over the world! International Drag Day was founded by Adam Stewart in 2009 through his fan page for drag queens on Facebook. The goal was to provide drag artists with a space to share their creativity and culture with a wider audience. International Non-binary People’s Day is celebrated globally on July 14th. Someone who does not identify solely as a male or female is referred to as non-binary. Non-binary people have gender identities that do not fit exclusively within the categories of man or woman. There is still much work to be done to ensure complete protection and rights for our non-binary communities, but we must also celebrate them!

The inaugural commemoration of the day took place in 2012, and this date was chosen because it falls between International Men's Day and International Women's Day. Although the term "non-binary" is modern, historical figures such as the Public Universal Friend are often cited as early examples of people who rejected gendered identities and pronouns.

Support our nonbinary members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community this International Non-Binary People's Day by speaking up for their rights, listening to their voices, and working with them to create a more inclusive world.

Each year, the week following International Nonbinary People’s Day (July 14) is recognized as Nonbinary Awareness Week – a time to shine light on the experiences, resilience, and rights of nonbinary people in Canada and around the world.

June 28th marks the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, an event that forever changed activism for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. This day has become an enduring story and symbol of when the fight for equal rights truly emerged into the open.

On the night of June 28th, a police raid took place at the mafia-run Stonewall Inn. As the police were detaining patrons of the Inn, a gender non-conforming woman called out to the watching crowd for help. Several accounts identify this person as Stormé DeLarverie, including herself on some occasions, though the person’s identity has never been proven beyond doubt. The request ignited a spark in the crowd, spreading unrest as passers-by and others on Christopher Street joined in. The riots lasted four days, growing as time went on until hundreds of people had joined the protests.

The Stonewall Riots were unprecedented in the climate of 2SLGBTQIA+ activism of the time. Before Stonewall, previous campaigners—known often as homophile groups—were extremely focused on ‘acceptable’ activism, which focused on gaining acceptance by proving that they were no different from heterosexual people.

Stonewall dramatically shifted this viewpoint. 2SLGBTQIA+ activists began to proclaim their existence proudly and openly, demanding recognition exactly as they were. Within a month of the riots, activists formed the Gay Liberation Front (GLF), the first organization to use the word ‘gay’ in its name. The GLF went on to organize the Christopher Street marches on the first anniversary of Stonewall, an event that would eventually morph into today’s Pride Month.

Did you know that the first Trans Pride March held in Canada took place in Toronto on June 26, 2009?

The very first Trans Pride March was planned and organized by trans rights activist and member of the trans community Karah Mathiason and her wife and fellow member of the trans community Diane Grant. The march was long overdue and a much-needed addition to annual pride events.

Many members of the trans community and their allies previously marched in Toronto Pride’s parades. Although these parades encompassed the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, they were often geared towards gay men and lesbians. Additionally, with political legislation and attacks on the trans community, there was a growing need for Trans Marches in Canada. Karah Mathiason therefore decided to organize the first Trans March in Canada!

Did you know that the first Pride flags were flown on June 25th, 1978?

In 1978 San Francisco, drag queen and Activist Gilbert Baker started working on multiple designs for a flag that could serve as a symbol of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, at the encouragement of multiple friends and a city supervisor named Harvey Milk. He chose to base his flag around a rainbow, a symbol of diversity and hope and eventually landed on an eight-stripe design.

Each colour on the eight-stripe flag has a specific meaning, something that’s continued through every evolution in the years since. Pink represents sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for art and magic, indigo for serenity, and finally, purple, meaning spirit.

The original flags were sewn and hand-dyed by Baker and around 30 volunteers and were flown for the very first time at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade on June 25th, 1978.

Since then, the rainbow flag inspired many other Pride Flags that have been created in years since for more specific identities. The rainbow flag is seen as encompassing the community as a whole. The flag has served as a representation of community and safety for decades and will continue to do so for decades in future.

National Indigenous Peoples Day, formerly known as National Aboriginal Day, is celebrated annually on June 21st in Canada. It is a day to acknowledge and commemorate the diverse cultures, traditions, languages, and histories of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

In Indigenous communities, the term “Two-Spirit” encompasses diverse gender identities, sexual orientations, and spiritual roles. The Two-Spirit community holds a unique and valued place within Indigenous cultures and traditions.

National Indigenous Peoples Day originated back on June 21, 1982, when the National Indian Brotherhood (now known as the Assembly of First Nations) called for the establishment of a National Aboriginal Solidarity Day. The proposal gained widespread support and was endorsed by various Indigenous organizations across Canada.

In 1996, the Governor General of Canada declared June 21st as National Aboriginal Day, providing an official recognition of the cultural richness and significance of Indigenous peoples. In 2017, the name was changed to National Indigenous Peoples Day to reflect the inclusive nature of the celebration.

June 20 marks World Refugee Day. Around the globe, the day is celebrated as a way to honour those who have been forced to flee their home countries due to persecution or conflict. We highlight the strength, resiliency, and courage of those who had no choice but to leave their homes. This day is also observed by highlighting both the rights of those forced to flee, along with acknowledging their hopes and aspirations for the future.

The United Nations passed a resolution to mark June 20th as World Refugee Day in 2000, and the day was then first celebrated in 2001. This day was chosen to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. Originally named African Refugee Day, the day was later renamed World Refugee Day.

As of 2021, there were approximately 26.6 million refugees and 4.4 million asylum seekers around the world, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency. Unfortunately, it is unknown how many of this global total identified as members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Though we do not know how many members are among these millions of refugees and asylum seekers, their lives and safety matter just as much as everyone else.

Celebrate by educating yourself on issues related to refugees and asylum seekers, volunteering, donating, or sponsoring a refugee or asylum seeker! Help make a difference in the world and in the lives of those left vulnerable due to persecution and conflict.

June 12th, 2026, marks the tenth anniversary of the Pulse Night of Remembrance.

This day reminds us of the 49 people who were killed and 53 others who were injured in a mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, in 2016, and to honour the victims of this tragedy and raise awareness about the ongoing struggle for 2SLGBTQIA+ rights and safety in the United States and around the world.

While the Pulse nightclub shooting occurred in the United States, the impact of this event was felt around the globe, including in Canada.

Join us for a guided walking tour in Winnpeg on Pride History this June 6th, 2026! 🌈 👟

PLEASE NOTE: The event start time has changed to 2 p.m. to prevent overlapping with the Winnipeg Trans March.

We'll be exploring key places, stories, and milestones connected to the history of Pride in Winnipeg.

Our tour starts at Vimy RidgePark and ending it at The Forks around the time that the Pride Winnipeg Festival begins, allowing participants to continue into the festival after the walk.

This event is open to community members, history enthusiasts, students, educators, and anyone interested in learning more about the history of the Pride movement in Winnipeg and Canada!
